Attach documents to Cortex Agent conversations: code¶
Every file in the Attach documents to Cortex Agent conversations recipe. To run the recipe, download document-context.zip, unzip it, and run the scripts from the document-context/ folder as the recipe describes. Comments in the files that say “see README” refer to the recipe page; the zip includes it as README.md.

"""
Document-context middleware for a custom Cortex Agent frontend.
Two jobs, both performed as the calling user:
POST /upload store one file in the caller's folder on the upload stage
POST /ask call the agent with a short hint naming the caller's files
Security model
* No shared Snowflake credentials. Every request must carry the caller's own
Snowflake token in "Authorization: Bearer <token>": a programmatic access
token (PAT) or a Snowflake OAuth access token. The same token is used for the
stage upload and for the agent REST call, so Snowflake sees the real user,
CURRENT_USER() resolves to them, and the upload folder is theirs.
* The upload folder is computed by Snowflake (UPLOAD_PREFIX()), never taken
from the request. File names are validated against a strict allowlist.
* Binds to 127.0.0.1 by default. CORS is off unless ALLOWED_ORIGINS lists the
exact frontend origins.
Run (see README for the full list of environment variables):
pip install -r requirements.txt
export SNOWFLAKE_ACCOUNT=<account identifier, for example myorg-myaccount>
export SNOWFLAKE_ACCOUNT_URL=https://<account identifier>.snowflakecomputing.com

NORTHWIND KITCHENS COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE REPORT - Q1 2024
Prepared by: Strategy and Insights Team (fictional sample document)
Date: April 15, 2024
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Quick-service demand recovered in urban cores in Q1 2024. Digital ordering now
accounts for 40 to 55 percent of transactions at the strongest operators.
Competitors are expanding fastest in the Southeast and West regions.
KEY COMPETITIVE MOVEMENTS
1. Contoso Grill (primary competitor)
- Opened 12 new locations in Q1 (8 in the Southeast, 4 in the West)
- Average ticket: $13.50, compared with $14.60 at Northwind Kitchens
- Digital ordering: 52 percent of transactions
2. Fabrikam Burgers (secondary competitor)
- Plans 50 new stores by the end of 2024, focused on the Midwest
- Average ticket: $11.80
- Drive-thru share: 55 percent
3. Tailspin Eats (emerging threat)
- Delivery-only kitchens in 30 cities, 100 percent digital ordering
- Average delivery ticket: $18.50
MARKET TRENDS
- Labor costs rising 8 to 12 percent year over year in every region
- Food cost inflation slowed to 2 to 3 percent in Q1
- Drive-thru demand steady in suburbs, declining in urban cores
- Digital ordering growing 15 to 20 percent year over year
RECOMMENDATIONS
1. Raise digital ordering to 50 percent of transactions by Q3 2024
2. Watch Contoso Grill openings in Southeast markets closely
3. Refresh the loyalty program to defend average ticket size

-- 5. End-user grants. The document tool runs as the caller, so the user role
-- needs READ on the stage (and WRITE to upload). The tool and the prefix
-- function need USAGE. Cortex Analyst runs its generated SQL against the
-- base table as the caller, so the user role needs SELECT on the semantic
-- view and on STORE_PERFORMANCE. Without the table grant the store_analytics
-- tool fails with a permissions error. The table is recreated above on
-- every run, so this grant is reissued every run too.

sql/03_upload_samples.sql¶
-- =============================================================================
-- 03_upload_samples.sql (run as COOKBOOK_DOCUMENT_CONTEXT_USER, with snow sql)
-- Upload the sample documents into YOUR folder on the upload stage.
--
-- PUT needs a literal stage path, and the folder name depends on who you are,
-- so pass it in with Snowflake CLI templating. From the recipe folder:
--
-- snow sql -q "SELECT COOKBOOK_DOCUMENT_CONTEXT.APP.UPLOAD_PREFIX()" --role COOKBOOK_DOCUMENT_CONTEXT_USER
-- snow sql -f sql/03_upload_samples.sql -D prefix=<the u_... value printed above>
--
-- COPY FILES cannot read from a user stage (@~), so there is no server-side
-- way to move files from @~ into the per-user folder; the client writes to the
-- folder directly. The last query checks that the folder you used is yours.
-- In an application, the backend does the same thing (see app/backend.py).

sql/04_ask_agent.sql¶
-- =============================================================================

-- Ask the agent questions with a file hint, the way a frontend would.

-- The Cortex Agent API has no file content block. The pattern: the file is

-- Cortex Agents authorize a run against the caller's DEFAULT role. Run this as
-- a user whose default role is COOKBOOK_DOCUMENT_CONTEXT_USER, or whose
-- default secondary roles (ALL) include it. Over REST, send
